Behavior Information

The Arrogant

Mistakes: Common misjudgments and errors in managing the child which may perpetuate or intensify the problem.

  1. Becoming defensive, emotional, and irrationally angry at the arrogant student. This makes the teacher act in inferior ways and, therefore, confirms the belief of the arrogant child.

  2. Overdisciplining, or pushing the consequences of behavior out of proportion to the act itself.

  3. Verbally putting down the student in class or in front of other adults.

  4. Grading this student harder than others. We may tend to do this if the student is arrogant about his/her intelligence or academic ability.

  5. Letting the student "hang" him/herself.

  6. Taking the behavior of this student personally and, therefore, not reacting professionally.

  7. Trying to handle all relationships publicly rather than privately. This is one of the biggest mistakes.

  8. Failing to contact parents. Remember, they are probably experiencing the same behavior at home.
