The Goldbrick

Mistakes: What common discipline mistakes of parents may make the problem behavior worse?

  • Accepting the behavior.

  • Letting your child think you believe he or she is clever.

  • Treating this child as a discipline problem.

  • Easing your demands on this child before he or she has learned that real work is the only avenue through which he or she can seek satisfaction.

  • Applying pressure without explaining the situation to teachers.

Please Note
We are labeling behaviors, not children! For the sake of convenience, we will describe behaviors with terms such as The Whiner or The Interrupter.

Never use such labels when talking to—or about—children! Doing so could cause many new problems and seriously damage the teacher-student or parent-child relationship.
